Going To vs Will

Rule in 60 secondsThe one pattern to memorise.

  • be going to + V: plans and intentions you already made; visible evidence predictions (*Look at the clouds! It's going to rain.*)
  • will + V: decisions made while speaking, promises, offers, general predictions (*I think it will rain tomorrow.*)
  • Form never changes with person: I will, she will; I am going to, they are going to.
  • TR: Önceden verilmiş karar → going to. Konuşma anında karar, söz, teklif → will.
  • Evidence rule: dark clouds now → going to; general guess → will.
  • Person test: will never takes -s — she will, not she wills.
  • Promise words: promise, offer and help signal will.

  • Contractions: I'll, you'll, he'll, won't (= will not), gonna (informal spoken).
  • Time words: tomorrow, next week, soon, this evening, in 2030.

  • gonna warning: gonna is speaking only — never write it.

3 classic trapsWhere Turkish speakers slip.

  • will for fixed plans: ❌ *I will meet my doctor tomorrow at 10.* (appointment) → ✅ *I'm going to meet my doctor tomorrow at 10.* (TR: Randevu gibi kesin plan → going to.)
  • -ing after to: ❌ *I'm going to studying.* → ✅ *I'm going to study.* (TR: to'dan sonra yalın fiil.)
  • s on will: ❌ *She wills come.* → ✅ *She will come.* (TR: will hiçbir kişide -s almaz.)
